Some changes to Michigan's mask mandate were issued last night.

The mask mandate in Michigan has been amended when it comes to outdoor events and athletes. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services has announced that face coverings are no longer required at outdoor gatherings of 100 people or less. People that are fully vaccinated and not showing symptoms can also get rid of the mask for indoor or residential gatherings.

When do these changes go into effect?

The new order from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services will begin starting on Thursday, May 6th, and continue on through Memorial Day on May 31st.

Do athletes still need to wear a mask?

Athletes playing non-contact sports will no longer need to wear a mask when competing. Coaches and athletes that are fully vaccinated are also now exempt from weekly COVID-19 testing.

Updates to outdoor gatherings and venues.

The MDHHS has made changes to outdoor gatherings and venues as well:

  • 1,000 person limit for large outdoor events with the exception of festivals and golf tournaments which need a COVID-19 safety plan to provide for 20 people per 1,000 square feet.
  • Stadiums can be at 20% of their fixed seating capacity.
  • Outdoor residential gatherings are allowed up to 50 people. However, that limit can increase to 300 people as long as there is less than 20 people per 1,000 square feet.
