Michigan Will Allow Winter Contact Sports To Resume
After months of fighting over winter contact sports in Michigan, it looks like the athletes will be allowed to play.
The ban on winter contact sports has been in place since late last year due to Covid related restrictions. This is the same type of ban that was put in place during the fall, causing a delayed start to the High School Football season. The MDHHS placed the ban on winter contact sports due to a rise in Covid cases in December, but met heavy opposition.
The Let Them Play movement that started in the fall organized another rally last weekend to protest the pause placed on winter sports. The group went so far as to bring a lawsuit against the state of Michigan over the ban. The current ban was supposed to expire on February 21st, and restricted play for Basketball, Hockey, Wrestling, and Competitive Cheer.
Today Governor Whitmer is expected to announce that the ban will be lifted, which means that sports can resume as soon as the MHSAA puts a plan in place. The bad news is that this is going to be another shortened season with a lot of risk for the athletes participating.
The MDHHS has announced that practice and competition can start on Monday February 8th.
