New research has surfaced showing that 1 in 8 people are addicted to social media and is causing damage to their relationships, work, and most importantly, sleep.

We've all been there. Getting trapped in that deadly spiral of social media attention. When you wake up every morning and the first thing you do is look on social media for notifications, then you are very much addicted, sad to say.

Researchers at Facebook found that around 1 in 8 of the social network's 2.9 billion users have addiction-like problems.

The researchers also found that the platform negatively impacts users sleep, work or personal relationships.

The report found that the usage patterns are “perceived by users to be worse on Facebook than any other major social media platform, which all seek to keep users coming back.”

And the researchers also found that in some cases, “parents focused more on FB than caring for or bonding with their children.” Source:Gotrooster.com

So what can we do to help combat this new era of interaction? The easy answer would be to just stay off your phone more. But, with everything in the universe being compacted into your phone the lure to hop on for a few seconds tends to turn into hours. I'd advise more recreational hobbies. Simple things like going on a walk while listening to music can do wonders for your mental health. Also, I feel like you should have a mandatory skip day for social media. I feel solitude isn't valued enough nowadays and it teaches a very valuable skill that a lot of us aren't comfortable with. The art of being alone. Take time to learn who YOU are and not what Hollywood antics people put up on social media. Because 9 times out of 10, those happy-go-lucky people on social media you see are just as depressed as you.
