Current and former Swartz Creek students have come together to organize a Black Lives Matter march in Creek on Friday.

The two protest coordinators, Brendan and Abbie (pictured above) talked to me on the phone about the upcoming event. They have been working diligently to make sure that the march is peaceful and impactful. They have organized with the Swartz Creek Police Department to make sure that any outside agitators will not be allowed to cause trouble.

One of the things that has impressed me the most is how the student organizers have handled the negative feedback that came from some community members on Facebook. Brendan posted the event on a Swartz Creek Parents page, and was almost immediately confronted by some angry residents. The post has since been closed, and most of the idiotic comments have been removed. Brendan took the time to explain to the idiots residents what the Black Lives Matter movement is all about. He showed patience, maturity, and restraint when dealing with the people.

I don't want to get into the weeds too much about the people that were posting the negative comments, but I will say that it shows how much further we have to go until people understand why Black Lives Matter is so important.

The march itself will start at the Middle School north parking lot at 4:30pm this Friday. The group will then walk to the Mary Crapo parking lot. One of the unique things that will be featured at this rally will be an open mic for people to share their thoughts and stories.

I will be at the rally with my family, and I hope that you are able to come support as well. If you do plan on attending, remember that masks are required and social distancing is encouraged.
