Not only does my wife work for Michigan State University, my step son Braden is very excited to start at Michigan State this fall taking business classes along with making new friends.

But most likely, Braden along with thousands of MSU students will be taking online classes due to the coronavirus pandemic.

MSU leaders expect the coronavirus outbreak to cost the university $50 to $60 million in the near term.

According to the Lansing State Journal, not only did MSU give housing and dining refunds and credits to on campus students who left last month, but it will miss out on money from the canceled Big Ten and NCAA basketball tournaments.

The coronavirus outbreak could easily extend into the 2020-21 academic year and an extended outbreak could have significant consequences for what happens on campus this fall.

University leaders are watching the pandemic's progress and evaluating their options, from moving fall classes online to staff reductions.
