Flint might not be the worst city in Michigan in regards to distracted-driving accidents, but we definitely have a lot of room to improve.

Using a tool from Michigan Traffic Crash Facts, you can break down all of the accidents that police record in Michigan. Mlive used that data to create a list of the top 50 most distracted driving cities in the state.

The good news is that Flint is not in the top 10. The bad news is that Flint ranks number 18 with 166 distracted-driving accidents last year. The number might actually be higher than that considering they separated Flint Township. The Township ranked 49th on the list with 75 accidents.

If you combine the two accident totals, then Flint would take over the 10th spot.

When it comes to the overall list, the rankings basically line up with overall population. It makes sense that the more drivers you have, the better the odds that a good number of them can't put down the phone.

I want to shame distracted drivers more, but I am guilty of doing it as well. I am the idiot who will just check my phone at a traffic light, and the next thing I know someone is honking at me because it's turned green.

In fact, if you're driving right now, make sure to look up between each paragraph . . . you know, just to make sure you're not going to hit anything.

I really think that it might be a good idea to put away the phone away before you even get in the car. Wrapping up any conversations or emails before you grab your keys might be a great habit to start. That way you can avoid making any mistakes before you get behind the wheel.

The other cities near us that showed up on the list were Saginaw ranked 29th, and Bay City ranked 39th.

You can check out the entire list here, but just make sure you are not behind the wheel when you do.
