Genesee Co. Sheriff’s Dept. Hosting ‘EDGE’ Event to Prevent Elder Abuse [VIDEO]

Elder abuse can go undetected for long periods of time, it can happen where you least expect it, and in some cases, it can even be deadly.

In the video below, Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson and Sergeant Jill Macey detail a couple of examples of how our county's senior residents can be among the most vulnerable. Unfortunately, the senior citizens in both of these cases have fallen victim to their adult children and one has passed away due to abuse that wasn't detected.

• One woman was abused physically by her son and endured years of living in deplorable conditions which eventually led to her death.
• The other fell victim to her adult daughter who was stealing money from her mother's bank accounts. Over the course of a year, the daughter helped herself to about $50,000 before someone at a local financial institution became suspicious.

But it's these victims and countless others that haven't been discovered that have prompted Swanson and Macey to create an event here in Genesee called 'EDGE' - that's Educate, Defend, and Guard the Elderly. The all-day event will be held at Genesys Banquet and Event Center in Grand Blanc on Thursday, October 7th.

The all-day event begins at 8 am and will feature all sorts of valuable information for anyone who has contact with senior citizens, in order to help spot the warning signs of abuse and know what to do if abuse is suspected.

Sheriff Swanson goes on to say that event will be presented "Swanson Style," meaning it will be a fun, high-energy event with door prizes and more. Food will be provided and the keynote speaker will Michigan Attorney General, Dana Nessel.
