Grand Blanc High School Renames Basketball Showcase to Honor “Voice of the Bobcats”
I had the honor of knowing Charlie Carmody and calling him a friend, and any of us that knew him knew two things. Charlie loved the Grand Blanc community and he loved Grand Blanc High School sports. So it's only fitting that one of the biggest events for the Grand Blanc High Basketball team will now bear his name.
The "T Gottagetit Hoop Classic" has officially been renamed the "The Charlie Carmody Best of the Best Classic" paying homage to the late teacher that was so loved by not only his students but an entire community.
The annual event at Grand Blanc High School in 2019, is held on the first Saturday in January and is considered the best showcase event in Michigan. The event brings together some of the best high school basketball talent in Michigan. In past years, the Classic has seen as many as 15-20 future division one college players participate according to the announcement.
Charlie Carmody, known as "The Voice of the Bobcats", graduated from Grand Blanc High School in 1980. Believe me, when I say, Charlie bled Red & Black and was everything Grand Blanc Bobcats. After college returned to the school he loved to teach math and announce sporting events. On Friday nights his voice would echo through downtown Grand Blanc as he called varsity football games from Frank Thomas Field under the lights.
Sadly, Charlie passed away in 2017 at the age of 54. His loss was one not just for his family and friends, but for the entire community, but his legacy has lived on through the press box that bears his name and his son Jonathan. Jonathan Carmody announced his first Grand Blanc High School Varsity game in January, picking up where his father left off. Now, one more Grand Blanc staple will keep his memory alive.
Charlie was more than just 'The Voice of the Bobcats' though," said Grand Blanc Athletic Director, Jerrod Dohm. "In many ways, he was the personification of the Bobcats. His name being added to this event is just one more way that his legacy will live on as a part of Grand Blanc Athletics."
