MDOT Announces Major I-475 Project, Tentatively Starting in 2023

I-475 through Flint may be getting a major facelift in a couple of years.

A new project has been announced for the Flint area by the Michigan Department of Transportation. MDOT is now discussing plans to make improvements on I-475 in Flint and held the first virtual meeting of many Wednesday night.

The Michigan Department of Transportation will be investing around $300 million to rebuild the section of I-475 that runs between Bristol Road and Carpenter Road. As of now, the project is set to begin in the spring of 2023. The project is scheduled to take four years to complete and will happen in two phases.

Phase One:
- 2023-2024
- Construction from Thread Creek north to the Flint River
Phase Two:
- 2025-2026
- Construction covers two additional sections of the freeway from Bristol Road to Thread Creek (south of Phase One) and from the Flint River to Carpenter Road (north of Phase One.)

What are they doing? According to the project manager, Trevor Block, this project will be a complete reconstruction of the roadway to include new concrete, 41 bridges will be fixed, replaced, or removed, and all exit and entrance ramps on that stretch will be worked on.

The funds for this project on I-475 are being made possible through Governor Whitmer's Rebuilding Michigan Program, which has a five-year transportation program scheduled for 2021-2025. To visually see what the Michigan Department of Transportation has planned, check out the interactive map here.

It's a long way off, but I will be happy when this is done. I travel along most of I-475 pretty much every week.
