Northbound I-475 to Reopen in Flint This Weekend

After nearly two years of construction, a major highway in Flint will reopen this weekend.

For anyone traveling north in Flint over the last couple of years, you are very familiar with construction detour signs. Back in 2018, a large construction project on I-475 began that closed down the northbound lanes. Since then, including all of 2019, northbound I-475 has been closed to through traffic. Well, that will all be changing this weekend.

After several weather delays and other unforeseen circumstances, northbound lanes on I-475 will reopen for travelers Saturday afternoon by 4 pm. After two years of finding different ways around this closure, drivers can now resume their older more direct routes using the highway. Construction crews used a 50-year pavement on the new stretch of road and it is expected to last a lot longer than that with proper maintenance.

I am definitely one of those travelers that is happy to see this project be finished. I never realized how much I actually used that stretch of 475 to get from place to place until it was closed down. My daughter lives in Flushing and I live in Grand Blanc. Depending on where I was coming from, that closure would sometimes add up to an extra 45 minutes to my trip.

For those construction and road workers out there that have spent the last two years working on that stretch of road, we thank you! Despite people normally yelling and bitching about the roads, you are the unsung heroes of the roadways in Michigan.
