The 'MI Shot To Win Sweepstakes' is Michigan's version of a vaccine lottery that includes a $5 Million prize and college sponsorships.

Michigan is a little behind when it comes to the vaccine lottery idea, but I'm still screaming better late than never. I think Ohio was the first state to start a vaccine lottery, and officials have credited the incentive with a spike in Covid vaccinations given.

The 'MI Shot To Win Sweepstakes' will give away $5 Million in cash prizes and 9 scholarships valued at $55,000 each. The goal is to give Michigan's vaccination numbers an immediate boost according to Whitmer's office.

The aim of the MI Shot To Win Sweepstakes is to increase the state’s vaccination rate by roughly 9 percent – or nearly 768,000 Michiganders – to achieve the statewide goal of 70 percent of residents age 16 and older who are immunized.

Governor Whitmer made the announcement this morning, but shortly before she did she sent a quick message to Ohio Governor Mike DeWine.

Obviously this is some light hearted joking between the two governors, but Michigan definitely stood up and took notice at the success Ohio had with their program. That's probably why the MI Shot To Win Sweepstakes looks so much like the original incentive plan that was layed out in Ohio.

You'll be able to get more information about the MI Shot To Win Sweepstakes here as the details are released.

Vaccinations in parts of Michigan have slowed to a crawl, and that's why a program like this is so important. The biggest question that is yet to be answered though is will an incentive like this convince the people who have decided not to get vaccinated despite all of the medical evidence. Time will tell.
