This is a heartbreaking story from Michigan's west side.

Police in Sturgis say a 9-year-old boy is responsible for the shooting death of his mother on Monday.

Pauline Randol was fatally shot with a rifle. Police have confirmed that the case is being investigated as a homicide.

WOOD-TV in Grand Rapids reports that this matter is being handled by the juvenile court system and say details are unclear at this time how the case will be handled.

The TV station also reports that neighbors say the youth was a "troubled boy." He's currently in custody and has undergone a psychological evaluation. The results of that evaluation are currently unavailable.
