Two Michigan Teachers Will Be Honored In Lansing For Writing Children’s Books

Two teachers from Mid-Michigan will be honored in Lansing next month for their children's book series around an adventurous turtle named Benson.

Tracy Foster and Shannon Cooper-Toma are both teachers in Mid-Michigan, and they are the creators of Benson's Adventure series. They have also created a non profit called Benson's Literacy Foundation. They are being honored in Lansing for their contribution to literature as part of National Reading Month.

Maybe it's because both authors are teachers, but the books connect with kids reading them so easily. Foster is a teacher at Corunna, and Cooper-Toma teaches in Chesaning. It helps that many of Benson's adventures happen right here in Michigan, that way kids might find a recognizable landmark or city they've been to.

The books do more than just entertain readers, they also help to promote childhood learning and literacy. All of the profits from the sales of the books go directly into Benson's Literacy Foundation.

Benson’s Literacy Foundation was created to provide children with unique literacy and travel opportunities.

March is National Reading Month, and the two authors will be honored on March 2nd during the legislative session. According to ABC12, the decision to honor Foster, and Cooper-Toma was made by State Rep Lori Stone of Warren. The two are committed to the mission of Benson's Literacy Foundation, and are even putting together virtual author visits for classrooms during reading month.
