Genesee County Could Receive $16 Million For Blight Control
Flint could be in the process of a major upgrade as current Mayor Sheldon Neeley put together a proposal for 16 million dollars for blight control (messed up houses) and is making its way to the Genesee County Land Bank.
This project is aimed solely at demolition for the city of Flint with over 800 dilapidated houses on the hit list, this project is way overdue. Thankfully the current Mayor Sheldon Neeley understands Flint's biggest problem which is the housing and is dedicating funds from the Federal COVID Relief Fund to get things done.
According to the Genesee County Land Bank, the proposal is going to help demolish 800 blighted structures in the city of Flint, with hopes of demolishing more than 24 hundred. Those including both residential and commercial properties. The landbank says all they need to make this project a go is approval from Flint City Council.
Mayor Neeley has already signed off on the project.
This could issue in a new era for the city that I grew up in. The city has been plagued with blight as far back as I can remember. My favorite neighborhoods and schools growing up as a child have become abandoned and destroyed. It's sad to see Civic Park the Elementary School I went to in the condition that it's in. Growing up in Flint I slowly watched my city decay into the state that's it's in now.
Now we have a chance to really make an impact on the future of the city I call home. Flint City Council needs to stop being completely useless and sign off on the funds so we can get started on this project. But in Flint, the politics can get super nasty and some individuals would rather hold up a major project to keep our current Mayor from receiving any shine. Don't believe me?
